Why electric bikes are a great form of exercise

Electric bikes are a great way to lose weight, get fit and you can have fun doing it.

1. Burn fat not your thigh muscles

For those of us who want to lose weight, especially body fat, electric bikes are a great form of exercise.

If you've done some personal training in the past or you've researched fat burning on the web then you'll know how important it is to keep your heart rate in the fat burning zone.

This is typically about 60% of your maximum heart rate. On a traditional bike it can be very difficult to keep your heart rate down below this level, especially if you live in an area as hilly as Brisbane. The benefit of exercising using an electric bike is you can use the electric motor to assist you on steep hills, steady climbs and whenever there's a headwind.

That way you'll spend nearly 100% of your ride in the fat burning zoning and not above your anaerobic threshold (thigh burning zone).

2. Riding an electric bike is fun

Everyone who jumps on an electric bike always has a big smile on their face when they stop and get off. I still smile when I ride mine especially when I'm going up hill. Electric bikes are silent, smooth and comfortable to ride. And the novelty of being pushed along by an invisible hand never wears off.

Because electric bikes make riding so enjoyable you don't even think about the fact that you're exercising, burning calories and losing weight.

Even better, you’ll find yourself exercising more often, especially if you start to leave the car behind wherever you can.

3. Electric bikes are a great form of low impact exercise

Because of its smooth circular action and non-weight bearing style of exercise, traditional cycling has long been recognized as a great form of low impact exercise.

Electric bikes take this one step further. Firstly the design of electric bikes means that you generally sit more upright than many of the traditional bike designs. This means you are less likely to strain your back or neck by over-stretching. A good traditional bike shop can achieve the same thing by making sure the frame size is right for your body shape and by adjusting the handle bar height and reach.

What they can't do is help reduce the strain on the pedals for you. By moderating the effort you put into your riding by using the electric motor you significantly reduce the amount of strain you put on your knees, thighs, hamstrings and lower back.

So if you're looking to lose weight, have fun while you're exercising and save time in your already busy life, then an electric bike might just be the answer.
