Introducing: Focus Jam2 SL EMTB Range

The Focus Jam2 SL (Super Light) E-MTB is a new model in the MY23 Focus e-mountain bike lineup, designed to deliver the best of both worlds between electric and non-electric. With its slimline, full carbon frame, which is designed around the lightweight Fazua Ride 60 electric drive system, it is an exciting addition to the growing category of lightweight E-MTBs. 

We recently attended its launch event in Spain and were lucky enough to put it through its paces. It certainly ticks all the boxes for trail agility, technical uphill performance, motor support and out and out style! (And it is completely silent.)

Here is an overview of what makes this new ebike special and the four models that will be available in Australia in 2023. 

Focus Jam2 SL E-MTB Design Features

Focus had a clear vision for the design of the Jam2 SL: a light dual suspension E-MTB reduced to the minimum that will make the most of every trail. This is how they have achieved this.

Frame Design & Engineering

To make it as light as possible Focus have designed and engineered a full carbon-fibre frame for the SL, using radical techniques to optimise stiffness and keep weight to a minimum.

With the two top models, the 9.0 and 9.9, they save even more weight by using a proportion of high modulus fibres in the frame which they call 'MAX Carbon'.

The 9.0 model weighs in at 17.9kg with the burlier 9.9 model weighing in at 19.19kg. The two more economical models are 19.69kg and 20.19kg respectively. 

Focus have also introduced a new design language for their frame appearance too and you will notice the two-tone colourways and discreet branding. 

Frame Geometry - Adjustable

With 160/150mm suspension Focus call the SL geometry 'fun-oriented'. It has a low standover height to help with bike handling and is built around trail agility without neglecting its stability. 

What's unique about the SL is that can have four individual geometry settings through easy adjustments of either the head angle or the chainstay length.

The head angle can be set to 64.5 degrees for a more downhill-oriented setting or to a steeper 65.6 degrees for more agile handling.

Similarly with the Flip Chip in the rear triangle you can adjust from 440mm to a longer 447mm for amore stable ride, particularly good for steep climbs. 

Fazua Ride 60 Drive System

The German-made Fazua drive unit is discreetly integrated into the frame and it is compact, light and near silent when you are riding.

It has a natural ride feel with 60Nm torque and, with the handy boost button, you get a burst of power to 450W for a couple of seconds. It offers three levels of power and you can also individualize the motor support via the Fazua App. 

Also integrated into the bike's frame is the 430Wh battery. This is removable via an allen key on the bottom side of the downtube. This is also what you need to do to recharge it.

If you want to add further range there is also a range extender with another 210Wh at your disposal.
