What Under $5,000 Gets You — and What It Does Not
At this price you get the fundamentals right: a mid-drive or quality hub motor, a battery sized for real Brisbane distances, reliable disc brakes and a frame and components that can be serviced for years. For riding the Bicentennial Bikeway, the hills around Mount Coot-tha, a commute into the city over the Story Bridge or a day on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail from Fernvale to Esk, that is everything you need.
What you generally do not get until our $5,000–$7,000 range is belt drive, 800Wh batteries as standard, and a choice of full-suspension eMTBs. If one of those matters to you, then it is worth stretching. If it does not, save the money.

Is an e-bike under $5,000 good enough, or will I regret not spending more?
For most riders, an e-bike under $5,000 is more than good enough — as long as it comes from a quality brand with a proper service network. Regret usually comes from buying too cheap: a battery that fades early, parts nobody can supply, or a bike no workshop will touch. Everything in this collection is serviceable in our Milton workshop. The riders who are better off spending more are those riding long days several times a week, riding rough trails, or wanting belt drive — and we will tell you if that is you.
Can I get a good electric mountain bike under $5,000?
Yes, but choose carefully. Under $5,000 most eMTBs are hardtails such as the Focus Jarifa2, which are excellent for fire trails, gravel and beginner mountain bike trails at places like Gap Creek. Full-suspension eMTBs under $5,000 do appear, but usually as model-year run-outs in limited sizes, so check the grid above for what is currently available. Stepthrough or crossbar — do I lose anything by choosing a stepthrough at this price?
No. Under $5,000 you can have a stepthrough or wave frame in almost every category that matters: the Kalkhoff Entice L Season and Endeavour wave models for touring, the Focus Aventura2 6.7 Wave for tougher gravel, and the XDS Advance 600 step-thru at the entry end. A stepthrough makes getting on and off easier, particularly with a loaded rack or at traffic lights, and modern wave frames are stiff enough that you do not give up handling. I am a heavier rider, or I need to carry a child — what should I look at?
Look at total rated weight — rider, bags and passengers combined — rather than just the motor. The Kalkhoff Endeavour C Move+ is rated to 170kg, which suits heavier riders and loaded touring. For carrying kids or a big shop, the Tern Quick Haul cargo e-bikes are built for it, with a low load deck and accessories for child seats. Can I test ride these bikes before buying?
