Before You Start – Two Things to Get Right
The biggest wins on a hill happen before you even reach the bottom of it. There are two things to sort out first.
Seat Height
This is the first and most important pre-climb habit. Your seat height doesn't need to be technically perfect – just high enough to let you put maximum power through the pedals. Here's why it matters: the Bosch motor gives you a percentage of what you put in. If your seat is too low, you're putting in less power, so the motor gives you less back. Before tackling the steepest climb in this guide, Sam deliberately raises her seat height to get maximum power down for the ascent.
Mode and Gears
Before you reach the base of the hill, switch into Turbo (or your highest assist mode) and set your gears. On the Bosch Smart System with the Performance Line motor that Sam is rising, Turbo mode delivers 340% extra motor power on top of your own input. When Sam is putting in around 175–250 watts herself, the motor is adding several hundred watts of assistance on top. The key is being ready before the climb starts – not scrambling to change mode or gears once you're already fighting the gradient.
Climbing Technique – What to Do on the Hill

Keep Your Cadence Above 70 RPM
Cadence – how fast you spin the pedals, measured in revolutions per minute – is your best friend on a climb. Bosch motors are specifically engineered to work most efficiently above 70 RPM. If you're grinding slowly in a big, heavy gear, you're actually working against the motor's design. Stay in a gear where you can keep a comfortable spinning cadence rather than forcing a heavy gear.
How to Change Gears Mid-Climb
Sometimes you'll pick a gear you're confident in, hit a pinch partway up, and realise you need to change down. When you do, ease off the pedal pressure just slightly – enough to take the load off so the cog can jump cleanly to the next gear. You don't need to stop pedalling; just reduce the force for a moment. Forcing a gear change under full load is what damages chains and cassettes. The lighter your touch at the moment of the shift, the smoother it goes.
Move Your Weight Forward on Very Steep Hills
On very steep gradients – roughly 15–20% and above – you need to think about weight distribution. Slide forward slightly on the saddle to keep more weight over the front wheel. This stops the front wheel from lifting, which can happen on very steep climbs like Eaton Street's 26% grade. Weight forward means traction and control.
Tackling Brisbane's Hills – Dunmore Terrace and Eaton Street Demonstration
To demonstrate this stuff on real Brisbane streets, Sam first tackles Dunmore Terrace, in Milton, a pretty decent hill and a solid test for any rider. Then we really put the bike - and Sam! - through its paces on Eaton Street – at a 26% gradient and one of the steepest streets in all of Brisbane. Even on the heavier 625Wh version of the Kalkhoff Entice, with the right technique – Turbo mode, raised seat height, smart gear management and weight forward – Eaton Street is absolutely achievable. As Sam puts it: “Get those things right, and those hills, they're so much fun, and they're really achievable. You'll love riding around Brissie.”
What If You Don't Make It?
If you run out of power or momentum partway up, don't stress – that's exactly what the walk assist function is for. It drives the bike along at walking pace under motor power, so you can hop off and walk beside it without wrestling with the weight of the bike up the hill. There's no shame in it; it's a built-in feature that exists for exactly this situation. And with a bit of practice, the technique becomes second nature and hills genuinely stop being a concern.
