Which belt drive e-bikes change gear automatically?

The Riese & Müller Nevo5 Automatic and Orbea Muga 10 use Enviolo AutomatiQ. The ADO Air folding bikes use an automatic single-speed belt system. An ebike equipped with Rohloff E-14 2.0 gearing also has an automatic option.

Which belt drive e-bikes fold?

The ADO Air 20 Pro, Air 20 Ultra and Air Carbon Pro, and the Tern Vektron P5i.

Which cargo bikes have a belt drive?

What is the Bosch Performance Upgrade 2.0?

A free update released in May 2026 that lifts the Performance Line CX motor to up to 120Nm of torque, where the bike maker enables it.

Can you service my belt drive e-bike?

Yes. Our Milton workshop is a Bosch Accredited Service Centre and services belts, hub gears and Bosch systems.

Belt drive e-bikes swap the oily chain for a Gates carbon belt, giving you a drivetrain that is clean, quiet and built to last. At Electric Bikes Brisbane we have been selling e-bikes since 2013, and our belt drive range comes from Riese & Müller, Kalkhoff, Tern, Orbea and ADO — city bikes, folding bikes, family cargo bikes and long-distance tourers. Every one is backed by our Milton workshop, a Bosch Accredited Service Centre.

Choose the Right Belt Drive E-Bike for the Job

Choosing a belt drive e-bike is like choosing any bike: start with the job you want it to do and the budget you have in mind, then find the best bike for both. Here is where each type fits.

Commuting and City Riding

For daily riding, the Kalkhoff Image range pairs a Gates belt with Enviolo or Shimano Nexus gearing, and the Entice 3 Excite Belt adds the Bosch Performance Line CX for bigger hills. The Riese & Müller Nevo5, Charger5, Culture and Swing5 offer belt-drive versions with Enviolo, Rohloff or Shimano Nexus hubs, and the Orbea Carpe 10 combines a carbon belt with Shimano Di2 electronic five-speed gearing. Folding and Compact

The ADO Air folding range and the Tern Vektron P5i put a belt drive into a bike that folds into a car boot, onto a train or under a desk — with no greasy chain to mark your car or clothes. See all folding e-bikes.

Cargo and Family

For carrying kids and shopping, the Tern GSD P00 longtail and HSD P5i compact cargo bike both run a Gates belt, as do the Riese & Müller Load5, Transporter2, Carrie2 and Multitinker2 belt versions. Compare them on our Riese & Müller cargo e-bikes page or browse all cargo e-bikes.

Touring and Adventure

For long days and rougher roads, the Orbea Muga 10 is a dual-suspension belt drive with automatic Enviolo AutomatiQ gearing, while the Riese & Müller Delite5, Homage5 and Superdelite5 add full suspension and Rohloff or Enviolo hubs. See our Riese & Müller touring and adventure e-bikes and the full adventure e-bike range.

Belt or Chain?

A belt is quieter and cleaner than a chain, needs no oil and lasts far longer. A chain still suits some riders, such as those who want a sportier feel, a lower price, or enjoy derailleur gear changing. Our guide to what a belt drive is, belt vs chain and whether it is worth it covers the pros and cons in detail, and gearing systems on e-bikes explained compares the hubs.

Belt Drive E-Bikes: Your Questions

Will a belt drive e-bike handle Brisbane’s steep hills?

For many belt bikes, yes — and our view has changed recently. In May 2026, Bosch released its free Performance Upgrade 2.0, which lets the Performance Line CX motor deliver up to 120Nm of torque where the bike maker enables it. With that much torque, a belt-drive bike climbs Brisbane’s steepest streets with ease. Rohloff hubs have always been strong climbers, even with older motors, though not quite as good as a chain. On belt bikes with less powerful motors, a chain may still be the better choice for very steep terrain, so tell us your route when you visit.

Is a belt drive worth it on a folding e-bike?

We think it is one of the best places for a belt. Folding bikes go in car boots, on trains and inside apartments, where an oily chain marks everything it touches. A belt stays clean to handle, runs quietly and needs very little attention, which suits riders who want to fold the bike and go.

What should I check when buying a belt drive e-bike?

First, the frame: belts need a frame designed for them, with a way to fit or change the belt. Next, the hub gear — Enviolo for smooth stepless shifting (including automatic versions), Rohloff for the widest range, or Shimano Nexus for simplicity. Then the motor: if you ride big hills, a Bosch Performance Line CX makes a real difference. Finally, buy where you can get it serviced — our Milton workshop looks after belts, hubs and Bosch systems.
