Step-through electric bikes have a low or open frame, so you can step through to get on and off instead of swinging your leg over the saddle. At Electric Bikes Brisbane we have sold e-bikes since 2013, and we see a step-through as a frame style choice rather than a type of bike: you can have one for commuting, trekking, rail trails or even dual-suspension comfort, from premium brands including Kalkhoff, Riese & Müller, Focus and Norco.

Why Choose a Step-Through E-Bike?

Riders choose a step-through for mobility and ease of use, particularly getting on and off. It makes a real difference if you have stiff hips, knees or back, if you stop and start a lot in traffic, or if you ride in work clothes. Step-through frames also suit less confident riders: being able to put a foot down easily and stand over the bike with the frame low makes it feel easier to manage, and that confidence is what gets people riding more often.

A step-through doesn’t mean compromising on the bike itself. Most models we stock use Bosch or Shimano mid-drive motors, batteries up to 800Wh and quality suspension, gearing and brakes.

City and Commuting

For everyday riding around Brisbane, the Riese & Müller Nevo5 and Swing5 have very low step-through frames, with Gates belt drives, front suspension and suspension seatposts. The Nevo5 is also available with automatic shifting. Kalkhoff’s Image and Endeavour Wave models are fully equipped city step-throughs with lights, mudguards and racks, and the Norco Scene VLT is a relaxed, upright city option. Helen’s Story: 12 Years of Riding

Helen bought one of the first Bosch-powered e-bikes we imported, a Riese & Müller Culture Rohloff, in our first weeks of business in 2014. She replaced it with another Culture in 2017 and is now waiting on her third, a step-through Riese & Müller Homage Rohloff, for more off-road capability as she heads into retirement. What to Check on a Test Ride

Step over the frame in the shoes you ride in and check you can put both feet down comfortably. Walk the bike and lift the rear to feel its weight, because you will move it in the garage and at the shops. Check the kickstand and how the bike balances when parked with a loaded rack. Then ride it: a good step-through feels stable and precise, not flexible, even with a heavy battery. Step-Through E-Bike Questions

Is a step-through right for me if I’m a less confident rider?

Very often, yes. Less confident riders tell us a step-through feels easier to manage because they can get on and off without balancing on one leg, and put a foot down quickly at a stop. A test ride is the best way to find out — try a step-through and a regular frame back to back and see which you feel more at ease on.

Can a step-through handle rail trails and rougher tracks?

Yes. The frame style doesn’t limit where you ride — the tyres, suspension and motor do. Trekking step-throughs such as the Kalkhoff Entice Wave and Focus Aventura2 Wave handle gravel rail trails, and dual-suspension models such as the Riese & Müller Homage5 are built for rough roads and bush tracks.

Step-through or lightweight e-bike — which should I choose?

If getting on and off is the main challenge, choose the frame first: a step-through. If lifting the bike onto a car rack or up steps matters more, look at weight first. Some bikes, such as the Kalkhoff L Wave models, give you both.
