Frequently Asked Questions

Why buy a lightweight electric bike?

A lightweight electric bike is best suited if you:

  1. Need an ebike that you can more easily manoeuvre and manage
  2. You have weight or size restrictions with regards to travelling or storing; or
  3. You prefer the performance and more natural, intuitive ride feel.
What range do you get with a lightweight electric bike?

Range estimates vary depending on the motor and battery combination however expect approximately 50-60km for ones with the hub motors to approx 90-100km for a fully equipped hybrid or stepthrough ebike powered by the Bosch SX electric drive system with a 400Wh battery. With many of the Bosch-powered lighweight ebikes you can also mount a range extender to get an extra 250Wh.

Specialty ebikes such as the ultra light gravel ebikes generally have greater range.

What is the best lightweight ebike for women?

That will depend on what style of ebike you like to ride. Most of the lightweight rail trail and lightweight commuter ebike models offer stepthrough frames as well as crossbar frames. If it is something smaller that you want then the lightweight folding ebikes suit very well.

What is the best lightweight ebike for motorhomes?

If you need an ebike to fit a smaller size then consider a lightweight folding ebike , which can easily fold down into a compact size.

If you are mounting your electric bike or electric bikes on a carry rack on your motorhome or caravan then you have a few options. This will depend on the type of riding you plan to do and the style of ebike that you prefer to ride. Our lightweight rail trail ebikes and lightweight electric mountain bikes are popular options. If you choose a lightweight ebike that also has a removable battery you are also able to reduce the weight on your rack even further.

What is the lightest ebike in Australia?

We have two ebikes in our range in hot contention for the lightest ebike in Australia. The ADO Air Carbon folding ebike is just 12.5kg without battery (14.5kg with) and the full sized, full power Orbea Denna gravel ebikes tip the scales at approx 14kg too.

Do lightweight ebikes have removable batteries?

Yes, most do however, generally, the high-performance / race-oriented models don't.

What is the best lightweight electric bike?

What is best really depends on your needs and the style of ebike you are after. If it's an ultra-light portable ebike you need, you can't go past the ADO Air Carbon at just 12.5kg (with battery removed). If you need to carry gear then its big brother the ADO Air 20 Pro or Ultra is a fantastic, low maintenance option at about 19kg.

Orbea has an excellent range of lighter than usual ebikes, with some incredible bikes across all categories. The new Orbea Denna gravel ebikes are very light - approx 14-15kg (less if you choose the higher end carbon models) and they are powered by motors that you can tune to full power if you wish.

Orbea shine on the electric mountain bike front too with the Orbea Rise, also equipped with the same drive system as the Denna, that has the full power motor option. These range from just 16kg to about 18.5kg, depending on the model. Last but not least is the full power Kemen range. Fully equipped and around 22/23kg and with long range batteries.

If you want a full sized, fully equipped leisure and commuter ebike then its hard to go past the Kalkhoff L.B range, all between 20-23kg with rear rack, mudguards kickstand, lights etc included. If it is a lightweight belt drive that you want then check out the Kalkhoff Image L.B Advance .

Can I layby my purchase and collect it later?

Yes. You may layby for up to 4-6 weeks.

How long will it take to get my order ready?

If the bike you have ordered requires building you can expect to collect it within 2-5 working days however we will always try to accommodate any special requests for timing. We aim to also have bikes immediately available and if this is what you require please contact us before placing your order to check.

Will you build and set up my bike for me?

Yes, all our bikes are built and fully tested before we hand it over to you. Let us know if you have any specific requirements eg. suspension tune, handlebar or seat height, and we can sort that for you while we are building it. If you are collecting instore we do further fine tuning of the set up with you eg. dropper / seat height.

Is shipping included in the price?

Not usually. We charge very reasonable rates for our delivery service, just passing along the costs we are charged. Our service is personalised and your order is delivered fully built and tested to your home, ready for you to ride.

If I live further afield, can I get it delivered?

Yes we offer an excellent home delivery service. Let us know when you purchase that you want it delivered and we will provide a quote. Our bikes are delivered fully built and ready to ride. [Note: there are restrictions on sending some bikes interstate.]

How do I get my new bike home?

There are a number of ways ranging from riding it (what a great way to get acquainted), carrying it on a bike rack, carrying it in or on your car, or getting it delivered / shipped. Check out our blog on How To Transport Your EBike.

How long will it take to handover if I collect instore?

Allow 20-30 mins if you wish our staff to run you through the key operations and aftercare.

Can I order online and collect instore?

Yes. You can order directly off our website and nominate when you check out that you want to collect it instore.

About the Lightweight Electric Bike

A premium lightweight ebike delivers a natural ride feel and is a great option if you want an ebike that is easier to manoeuvre and transport. With the development in drive system technology and component manufacturing there are some amazing high-performing lightweight ebikes available too.

A lighter ebike responds quicker, corners more intuitively and rolls along faster after past the pedal assistance limit. Lightweight electric bikes bring back that analogue bike experience - a sense of direct connection between rider and trail.

How Much Does a Lightweight Electric Bike Weigh?

When people talk about "lightweight" it depends on the category.

Standard commuter / hybrid-style lightweight ebikes typically weigh around 20-23kg, including the extra equipment they carry such as rear rack, mudguards etc.

If you are after a high performance, specialty electric bike such as a gravel or road ebike there are ebikes that can weigh as little as 12-13kg.

For electric mountain bikes, anything under 19kg is considered quite light.

Weight distribution and build quality matters just as much as total weight though. A 25kg ebike with low, central mass and a high quality frame and assembly will feel more stable, comfortable and agile to ride that a lighter bike with the weight higher or further back.

How Are Lighter Weights Achieved on Lightweight EBikes?

Lighter weights in ebikes are achieved by using premium materials like aluminium or carbon fiber, and lighter weight components. They also generally have smaller motors and batteries that are designed specifically to deliver the natural ride feel that riders interested in this category tend to prefer.

The Trade-Offs

Every gram saved has a cost. Smaller batteries reduce range; thinner frames can flex more; lighter tyres may puncture easily. The goal is balance.

Trail riders might trade a large 750Wh battery for a 360Wh one to save three kilos and still enjoy a solid two-hour ride. Heavier riders or those who tour long distances may prefer a sturdier frame and longer range.

Frame Materials and Design

The frame makes up roughly a quarter of an e-bike’s weight. Aluminium is the go-to for strength and value. Carbon fibre can shave 1–1.5 kg while allowing engineers to tune stiffness, but it’s costlier and harder to repair.

One-piece carbon moulding, internal routing, and integrated batteries all help reduce weight while improving balance and aesthetics. These are lower volume and more costly to produce though.

Motor Systems That Make a Difference

Motor systems like Bosch Performance Line SX, Shimano EP801, Fazua Ride 60, TQ HPR50, and the new Avinox motor (featured in Amflow eMTBs) represent the leading edge of lightweight design.

These motors are generally more compact in form and have an excellent power-to-weight ratio — up to 85Nm in a sub-20 kg build. It’s helping redefine what’s possible for trail and cross-country eMTBs.

Batteries and Energy Density

The battery is the single heaviest ebike component. Newer 21700 and 4680 cell types pack more watt-hours per kilogram, giving riders greater range without extra bulk.

Modular designs — such as 360Wh internal batteries paired with removable range extenders — are becoming popular. Integration doesn’t always save weight, but it improves frame stiffness and keeps the ebike sleek and balanced.

Components and Build Philosophy

Wheels and tyres influence ebike weight more than most realise. Rotating mass matters — lighter wheelsets and faster-rolling tyres can instantly make an e-bike feel more lively. Air shocks reduce weight, while coil setups suit riders chasing control and traction.

Real-World Relevance

Every detail counts: carbon bars, one-piece cockpits, lightweight drivetrains. But function comes first — a touring e-bike loaded with panniers needs durability more than race-day grams.

A 17 kg lightweight electric bike feels nimble and quick, closer to a conventional pedal bike. A 25 kg full-power ebike feels planted and secure, often with a larger motor and battery for extended range.

It’s about the right match. Apartment dwellers and motorhome travellers love the practicality of lighter e-bikes, while adventure tourers prefer the reassurance of a few extra kilos.

Final Thoughts

Weight matters — but not as much as fit, feel, and purpose. A bike that suits your body, terrain, and riding style will always deliver more joy.
