Our Honest Advice on a $4,000 Budget
We would rather tell you now than after you buy. There are genuinely good e-bikes under $4,000, and the best of them are the run-out, ex-demo and used bikes on this page. But the new bike we recommend most often for Brisbane riders — the Kalkhoff Entice L Season, a lighter-weight touring model customers love for its ride quality and easy handling — sits just above this line. If your budget can stretch a little, have a look at our e-bikes under $5,000 first. If it cannot, the bikes below are the ones we would actually stand behind.
What Under $4,000 Buys in 2026
Under $4,000 is no longer a compromise band, but it is a band where you choose what to prioritise. You can have a quality mid-drive motor, a bigger battery, or full suspension — rarely all three at once. Batteries in this range now commonly run from 400Wh up to 625Wh, so the old advice that 400Wh is plenty deserves a second look if you ride Brisbane hills daily. What matters more than the headline price is whether the motor suits your terrain, whether the frame style suits how you get on and off, and whether anyone locally can service the bike in three years' time.

Choosing Between the Types Under $4,000
Commuter and Urban E-Bikes
The most common reason people walk into Milton with a $4,000 budget is a commute they have stopped enjoying. Look for an upright position, hydraulic disc brakes, mudguards and lights already fitted, and enough battery for the return trip without charging at work. Brisbane's bikeway network — the Bicentennial Bikeway, Kedron Brook, the Story Bridge — suits this kind of bike, and the hills are exactly where the motor pays for itself. Folding E-Bikes

Trekking and Rail Trail E-Bikes
If you want one bike for bike paths, gravel and a weekend on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, a trekking bike is the most versatile choice at this price. Electric Mountain Bikes
Under $4,000 an eMTB is usually a hardtail, such as the Focus Jarifa2 6.7 — genuinely capable on the fire roads and smoother singletrack around Mount Coot-tha and Gap Creek. Full suspension under $4,000 only appears as occasional run-out stock in whatever size is left.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you get a good full-suspension eMTB under $4,000?
Occasionally, and only as run-out or clearance stock. At full retail, a full-suspension eMTB with a mid-drive motor and a battery worth having starts above this range. When a model year changes, the remaining sizes are discounted and sometimes drop under $4,000 — but there are usually only one or two frame sizes left. If your size is available, it is excellent value. If it is not, a quality hardtail will serve you better than a full-suspension bike in the wrong size. What has changed in Queensland's e-bike laws, and does it affect what I buy?
Yes, and at this price it matters most. Since 1 July 2026, e-bikes ridden in public in Queensland must meet the European standard EN 15194 and carry a compliance label, or be verified under the state's E-Bike Assurance Scheme. E-bikes that do not meet EN 15194 can still be ridden until 28 February 2027 if they are no more than 250W with assistance to 25km/h; from 1 March 2027 they need a verification label. Since 31 August 2026, riders must also be 16 or older and hold a valid driver licence — a Learner licence is the minimum. This is where cheap online bikes become expensive: a 500W or throttle-only bike cannot be made legal. If you are buying a used or older e-bike anywhere, check for the EN 15194 label first — we are happy to look at one for you.
Are ex-demo and used e-bikes worth buying?
From a store that services them, often yes — they are some of the best value on this page. An ex-demo bike has usually done a few test rides and little else, and is typically sold with a meaningful reduction. A used bike from us has been through our workshop, so we know its history and its battery condition. Where the risk sits is private sales: battery health is invisible from the outside, and a replacement battery can cost a large share of the bike's value. How much battery do I really need in Brisbane?
Work backwards from your worst regular ride, not your average one. A flat 10km commute each way is comfortable on 400Wh. Add serious hills, a headwind, a heavy load or a preference for the highest assist setting and the same battery's range can halve. Brisbane's terrain punishes under-buying here, so if your budget stretches to 500Wh or 625Wh in a bike you otherwise like, take it — and tell us your regular route so we can be specific.
Two model years are listed side by side — which should I buy?
The newer model year is not automatically the better buy. Sometimes the change is only paint and decals, in which case buy whichever colour and size suits you. Sometimes it is a different motor, battery or brakes, which changes the value entirely. Ask us which it is on the bike you are looking at — it is a thirty-second answer and it can save you a few hundred dollars.
Is a cheaper e-bike from an online-only brand a reasonable risk?
The purchase price is rarely the problem. The costs arrive later: warranty claims that need you to ship the bike away, batteries with no replacement path in two years, parts no local workshop can source, and now compliance labelling that decides whether the bike is legal to ride at all. At this price you are not paying for a badge — you are paying for a bike that can be fitted, serviced and supported in Brisbane for its whole life.
