Learning how to charge your e-bike battery correctly is the single easiest way to protect one of the most valuable parts of your bike. Take it from our co-owner Sam: not long ago she plugged her charger in, headed off the next day on her commute from Samford into Milton, and discovered she had never switched it on at the wall. The result was a very hard, very sweaty ride on a nearly dead battery, pedalling a heavy e-bike the last stretch with almost no assist.

Where to Charge Your E-Bike — Finding the Charge Port
Almost every e-bike has a charge port somewhere on the frame, and its location varies from bike to bike. Generally it sits either near the motor or at one end of the battery. On our demo bike, the Kalkhoff Entice 3.B running on the Bosch Smart System, the charge port is easy to reach once you know where to look.
Roughly 80 to 90% of e-bikes have a removable battery, which gives you options. If you do not have a power point in your garage or carport, or if you are out touring, you can take the battery out and charge it indoors. We will show you the principle with a Bosch PowerTube, but it works much the same across most battery types, whether you charge on the bike or off it.
One last thing, and Sam would want us to mention it: always check the charger is actually switched on at the wall. It sounds obvious, but it is the easiest step in the world to skip, and a nearly flat commute is a hard way to learn the lesson.
How to Know Your E-Bike Is Charging
The quickest way to confirm your bike is charging is the LED indicator light on the battery. It blinks while charging, and as the battery fills up you will see more bars light up. If your bike has a display such as the Kiox 300, it also shows the charging status and the exact percentage in real time.
The Bosch Smart System goes one step further. It can display a predicted range remaining across all of your assist modes, so before a longer ride you can see roughly how far you will get in Eco, Tour, eMTB, or Turbo. That is genuinely useful when you are planning a big day out.
Do You Need to Charge After Every Ride?
Sam's habit is to plug the bike in as soon as she gets home, mostly because she often changes her plans mid-ride and likes knowing she has a full battery ready to go. But charging after every ride is not compulsory. How often you charge really depends on your riding style and how far you ride.
The one habit that does matter: do not let the battery sit empty. More on that below from Alexander.
Alexander's Battery Care Tips — From EBB's Service Centre
Here is where our head technician Alexander takes over. These are the tips he shares with customers every week in our Milton service centre.
Tip 1 — Always Use the Correct Charger
Always use the charger supplied with your bike, or a correctly compatible replacement. If you lose or break a charger, replace it with the exact model for your battery. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery chemistry, so it is not a corner worth cutting.
Tip 2 — Keep Your Battery Cool and Dry
Temperature matters more than most people realise. Brisbane summers are hot, and leaving your battery in a car parked in direct sun can push it into thermal protection mode, where it simply will not operate until it cools down. Store and charge your battery in a cool, dry location, ideally indoors at room temperature.
Tip 3 — Never Store Your Battery Empty
Running the battery all the way down to 0% on a big ride is completely fine, so enjoy the adventure. The important part is to plug it in when you get home. Do not leave it flat for weeks or months. Storing a battery at very low charge is one of the leading causes of premature battery failure.
Tip 4 — The One Exception: Long-Term Storage
There is one exception to charging fully. If you will not be riding for a couple of weeks, such as a holiday or a winter break, Bosch recommends storing the battery at 20 to 60% charge. At EBB we lean toward 60% as the sweet spot. And do not leave it sitting at 100% for extended periods either.
Tip 5 — Use It. Regularly.
Think of your battery like a pond of water. Let it sit unused and it goes stagnant. Use it regularly and the chemistry stays active and healthy. Rides do not need to be epic, either, short commutes count. We have seen original batteries still going strong at 40,000 kilometres in customers who rode regularly and looked after the basics.
