Rocky Mountain E-Bike Overview: 2020 Range

The name Rocky Mountain is legendary in the sport of mountain biking. By developing their own drive system - the most powerful mid-drive available with 108Nm torque - Rocky Mountain is fully committed to providing an exceptional ride experience. We welcome their 2020 range - an outstanding game-changing selection of nearly a dozen top-quality dual suspension eMTBs.

About the Rocky Mountain Powerplay E-MTB

The Rocky Mountain Bicycle Co is based in the mountain biking mecca of British Columbia, near Vancouver's North Shore, and it is a legendary brand in mountain biking circles, particularly for pioneering what is now known as 'freeriding'. In their 35-year history they have always pushed the boundaries.

Rocky Mountain have taken the same pioneering approach with their electric bike range. They chose to design their ebikes from the ground up. This included developing their own electric drive system, the 'Powerplay' which is powered by Dyname mid-drive motor, so they could retain the ride quality of their highly evolved non-motorized bikes and address some of the downfalls of other motor systems.

The result is the Powerplay systems which is incredibly powerful and very responsive particularly when climbing (see the 'Climbing Ain't Dead' video below!) Their ebikes also come with large 672Wh capacity batteries and the entire electric drive system is designed to be easy to service. Being able to retain the geometry and handling of the Rocky Mountain mountain bike platform, the 'Powerplay' electric mountain bike range allows riders to do things that they have only previously dreamed of.  Freeride definitely ain't dead with these machines!

Powerplay: Dyname 3.0 mid-drive motor – Fast facts

This creates a system which offers the most powerful legal mid-drive system available on an e-mountain bike in Australia this year, with the longest single-battery range. Rocky Mountain went one step further too and ensured the charge unit is quick so you can get back out there. Here are the headline specs:

  • Rated power 250W up to max/peak power: 1200W
  • Torque: 108Nm
  • Voltage: 48V
  • Battery: 672Wh
  • Charge time: 80% in 2 hours
  • System weight: 3.7kg

Rocky Mountain Powerplay e-Bikes: Instinct and Altitude

Rocky Mountain ebikes are all dual suspension and focus at the premium end of the market. For 2020 they have expanded their range into nearly a dozen ebikes. There are two distinct series though, depending on the type of riding you plan to do.

  1. The Powerplay ‘Instinct’ e-bike – for all-day trail riding and touring, 29” wheels and 140mm travel
  2. The Powerplay ‘Altitude’ e-bike – for aggressive trail, 27.5” wheels and 160mm travel

There is also a special ‘Instinct BC Edition’ which is a cross-over model – 29” wheels and 160mm travel. The video below provides a good explanation of the differences and capabilities of the Powerplay Instinct and Powerplay Altitude models.

For each series there are a number of options driven by frame material and what grade of forks, gearing and braking you want.
