FAQs

What makes a good rail trail ebike?

A rail-trail e-bike sits in the middle ground between commuter and adventure ebike. It has a strong efficient motor like the Bosch Performance Line, reasonable battery size with range of at least 80km, front suspension, wider, semi-slick tyres and a comfortable ride position. If you plan to carry gear then having a rear rack and kickstand is desirable.

What size battery do I need on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail?

A 400Wh battery on a bike with a lightweight motor like the Bosch SX will give you up to 70-80km; a 600Wh battery on a full-powered high torque motor like the Bosch Gen 5 CX will give somewhere between 80-100km on a rail trail ride. There are plenty of opportunities to stop and charge too on most of the popular rail trails.

Is a license or registration required to ride the rail trails in Queensland?

If your electric bike is EN15194-certified then no license or registration is required. This means it is rated to 250W continuous power and the power assists your pedalling up to 25km/hr.

Are Queensland rail trails suitable for beginners and returning cyclists?

Yes. Most rail trails have smooth gravel or concrete surfaces and very well maintained. Furthermore, because they follow railway corridors, hills don't generally get any steeper than 5%.

Can I test ride a rail trail at Electric Bikes Brisbane before buying?

Yes, we encourage you to test ride and we have a good circuit close by for a real world ride. You can book a test ride online or contact us to discuss what you would like.

Rail trail electric bikes are purpose-built for Queensland's (and Australia's) growing network of rail trails with their mix of gravel and sealed trails — the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, South Burnett Rail Trail, the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, and beyond. At Electric Bikes Brisbane, we've been helping SE QLD riders get out on the trails since 2013. Nick Willis, EBB co-owner, rode the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail before it officially opened in 2018 — and that first-hand experience is how we select and recommend every bike in this collection.

What Is a Rail Trail Electric Bike?

As Nick puts it: "A proper rail trail ebike sits right in the middle ground — it's more capable than a city commuter and not as aggressive as a mountain bike. You want a bike that's comfortable to ride all day, handles loose gravel well, and still rolls efficiently on sealed sections."

That means decent front suspension, 2.0–2.4-inch tyres, a reliable mid-drive motor, and a comfortable riding position so you can look around and enjoy where you are. These bikes are designed for the distance and terrain of Queensland's rail trails — not racing pace, not technical singletrack — just reliable, comfortable, confident riding from town to town.

Queensland Rail Trails — Where These Bikes Are Made For

SE QLD has some of Australia's best rail trail riding within a short drive of Brisbane. Here's what you're working with:

  • Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT): 161 km from Wulkuraka to Yarraman — Australia's longest recreational rail trail and an epic must do. Mostly gravel, gentle gradients, passing through Fernvale, Lowood, Esk, and charming country towns. It's the benchmark Queensland rail trail ride and the one we're asked about most in the store. Most riders do it in 2–3 day sections; a well-specced ebike with a 625Wh+ battery covers a full day's stage comfortably in Tour mode.
  • South Burnett Rail Trail from Kingaroy to Kilkivan Rail Trail: 57 km of packed gravel through farmland and bushland — a great overnight option with the right bike and a set of panniers. Quieter than the BVRT and a genuinely beautiful ride.
  • Northern Rivers Rail Trail: Just over the border starting at at Murwillumbah and the two sections already complete. The first section, Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek, has become one of the most popular rail trails for SE Qld riders to visit and do, and with a full 132km in the pipeline we will have another epic is just on our doorstep.

What to Look For in a Rail Trail eBike

Not all ebikes are suited to a full day on Queensland gravel. Here's what separates the right bike from the wrong one for rail trail riding:

  • Motor: Mid-drive motors (for example Bosch Performance Line and Performance Line PX and SX, Shimano EP600) are the standard for rail trail riding — they use the bike's gears efficiently, give natural pedal feel, and handle the variable terrain from flat sealed sections to loose gravel climbs. Hub motors are fine for short flat rides but struggle on sustained Queensland hills when loaded.
  • Battery: A 600Wh+ battery is the minimum for day-trip riding. Most experienced riders on the BVRT run a 625–750Wh battery in Tour+ or Auto mode and finish a 50–80 km day with charge to spare. Carrying a Bosch Powermore range extender eliminates range anxiety entirely on longer sections.
  • Tyres: Around 2.2 inches with a semi-slick tread is the sweet spot — wide enough for grip and comfort on gravel, efficient enough not to drag on sealed sections. The Schwalbe Johnny Watts is a favourite of Nick's for mixed surfaces. Run pressures slightly lower than you would on a road bike — it transforms comfort on a long day.
  • Riding position: Slightly more upright geometry matters on a rail trail. You're not racing — you're exploring country towns, spotting wildlife, and riding for five or six hours. A bike that forces you forward gets uncomfortable fast. Look for adjustable stem height and a handlebar position that lets you sit tall and look around.
  • Luggage capacity: If you're doing multi-day rides, you'll want a rear rack and ideally front fork mounts. Most bikes in this collection support panniers and handlebar bags. Carrying weight with a mid-drive motor on a rail trail is genuinely enjoyable — the assist adapts to the load without you noticing.

Rail Trail vs Adventure eBike — Which Do You Need?

If you're primarily riding Queensland's rail trail network — the BVRT, Kingaroy to Kilkivan, or similar gravel and sealed trail routes — the bikes in this collection are exactly right. They're tuned for comfort-first geometry, efficient rolling on mixed surfaces, and the distance capability that makes a trail ride like these enjoyable rather than exhausting.

If you want more capability — bikepacking on rougher mixed terrain, loaded touring on routes that take you off-trail, or a single bike that does rail trails on weekends and technical fireroad on public holidays — see our Electric Adventure Bikes collection. Those bikes can do the rail trail easily, but they're specced for the rider who wants more range of terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rail Trail eBikes

What makes a good rail trail ebike?

The sweet spot for Queensland rail trail riding is a mid-drive motor (Bosch Performance Line and Performance Line PX or SX, Shimano EP600), with battery for up to 80-100km (a 400Wh battery if a lightweight motor like the Bosch SX, or 500–750Wh battery for the stronger 75Nm+ motors), 2.0–2.4-inch semi-slick tyres, front suspension, and a comfortable riding position. Nick Willis from our team rode the BVRT before it opened in 2018 and has fitted out hundreds of Queensland riders since — his shortlist always starts with those fundamentals. Beyond that, it's about matching the specific bike to how far you want to go, how rough it could get, whether you're doing day rides or multi-day sections, and whether you'll be carrying gear.

How far can I ride on one charge on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail?

On a 600–750Wh battery in Tour or Auto mode on a full-powered motor with 75Nm, most riders comfortably cover 70–100 km on a BVRT stage — enough for a full day's riding with stops for coffee and lunch. Heat, headwind, rider weight, and loaded panniers all reduce range, so factor those in for summer riding. A Bosch Powermore range extender (compatible with most Bosch Smart System bikes in our range) adds another 250Wh and removes range as a planning variable entirely. Many country towns, cafes and pubs along the BVRT offer charging — a great excuse to stop for an hour.

Do I need a licence or registration to ride a rail trail ebike in Queensland?

No licence or registration is required for the pedal-assist ebikes in this collection. In Queensland, ebikes with a motor up to 250W and a maximum assisted speed of 25km/h are classified as bicycles — no registration, no special paths required. All bikes in this collection fall within that definition.

Which Queensland rail trails can I ride as a beginner or returning cyclist?

That's the great thing about rail trails - they are perfect for beginners and returning cyclists. The lower sections of the BVRT and Kingaroy to Kilkivan are both excellent beginner-friendly choices — gentle gradients, well-maintained gravel, and regular towns for stops. The electric assist changes the equation significantly: riders in their 60s and 70s regularly complete 50 - 60km BVRT stages on our bikes without much previous cycling experience. Nick's advice for first-timers: start with a single section rather than the whole trail, carry water and sunscreen, and don't underestimate how much you'll want to stop and take in the scenery. Pop into the store and we'll help you plan the right first ride based on your fitness and the bike you choose.
