What Makes an eBike "EN15194 Certified" — and "NSW Certified"?

EN15194 is the European safety and performance standard NSW has adopted for e-bikes, and it's more specific than just "250 watts." To carry the certification, a bike must have a motor continuously rated at 250W, must only provide assistance while the rider is pedalling, and that assistance must cut out once the bike reaches 25km/h. If a throttle is fitted, it can only provide "walk assist" up to 6km/h. A 500W motor that's been software-limited to 250W does not meet the standard — the certification has to be built in from the start.

NSW certification is a separate, additional step on top of EN15194. Even a genuinely EN15194-certified bike also needs its own NSW Fair Trading Certificate of Approval — a unique certification specific to NSW, issued per model, and confirmed with its own sticker on the bike. Retailers selling e-bikes into NSW without this additional certification sticker face heavy fines from NSW Fair Trading, so it's worth checking for it specifically rather than assuming an EN15194 stamp alone is enough.

The timeline matters too: since 1 February 2026, new e-bikes sold in NSW must already be certified and marked. Existing 500W bikes bought before 1 March 2026 get a three-year grace period and remain road-legal until 1 March 2029, after which only EN15194-certified bikes are legal to ride on NSW roads. The NSW label indicates that the specific e-bike model has completed the applicable NSW certification process, which is separate from meeting the EN15194 standard. You can also verify the model independently on the NSW Fair Trading certified e-micromobility product list. Importantly, a higher-powered motor that has simply been software-limited to 250W does not automatically satisfy EN15194 requirements. Likewise, EN15194 compliance alone does not confirm that a model has completed the separate NSW certification process. Every e-bike in this collection meets both requirements.

Can I ride a NSW-certified e-bike in Queensland too?

Yes. Provided the e-bike complies with EN15194, it can also meet Queensland’s requirements for a legal e-bike. The bikes in this collection are EN15194 compliant, making them suitable for legal road and path use in both Queensland and NSW, subject to each state’s rider and road rules. The additional NSW certification relates to the specific requirements for supplying approved e-bikes in NSW, rather than replacing the underlying EN15194 standard.
