Frequently Asked

If you're still deciding between motor systems or trail categories, start at our electric mountain bikes collection — it covers the full picture. This page is specifically for riders who have landed on Bosch and want to understand why a Bosch electric mountain bike belongs on Queensland's trails, what the current generation delivers, and which bike in our Brisbane range suits your riding.

Why Bosch for Trail Riding?

There are several capable mid-drive motor systems on the market. Bosch's edge on the trail comes down to one thing: torque-sensing precision.

At Electric Bikes Brisbane, we've been riding and fitting Bosch-powered trail bikes since Bosch entered the eMTB market in 2015 — and the word we return to consistently is natural. The motor reads what your legs are doing and responds proportionally, without lag and without overshoot. Critically, it stops when you stop pedalling. Some competing systems carry overrun after you ease off — on a mountain bike, at speed, through a corner, that matters. Bosch doesn't do that.

Sam's experience on the Focus Jam2 at Ironbark and Gap Creek — the loose-over-hardpack surfaces that dominate South-East Queensland trails — put this in sharp relief. Coming into a berm too fast and needing to scrub speed before putting the power down on exit: the torque sensing read the situation precisely and made it safe rather than dangerous. On loose over hardpack, where the dominant risk is tyre spin-out under sudden torque, Bosch's sensitivity means you get drive without losing grip. It doesn't give you too much at the wrong moment.

Ken West — 2025 QLD eMTB State Champion — puts it plainly: "I personally love the Bosch motor and how it delivers its power — and how it tapers off naturally as you reach the speed cut-off."

From a workshop perspective, our head technician Alexander rates Bosch highest of any drive system we service: precise, predictable diagnostics, and consistently the lowest warranty rate of any system we stock. That reliability extends specifically to Queensland's heat — Bosch Gen 5 CX handles sustained riding in hot conditions particularly well.

The Gen 5 CX — A Motor Built for the Mountain

The Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 is the motor across our current F26 Focus range and the Orbea Wild. With Performance Update 2.0, it now delivers up to 120Nm of torque and a 600% support ratio — numbers that bring it into direct competition with headline figures from other leading systems.

To put that in honest context: most recreational riders, ourselves included, run the Gen 5 CX at the standard 85Nm setting. That is more than enough for the vast majority of SEQ trail riding. The 120Nm ceiling is there when you need it — extended alpine climbs, race conditions, riders who simply want the headroom. You can set the torque ceiling yourself through the Flow app. Full details on Performance Update 2.0 are in our EBB blog post on the Flow app Performance Update.

Our run-out models — the Focus Thron2 6.7, Thron2 6.9, and Sam2 6.7 — run the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 4. It's a highly capable motor and a genuine entry point into Bosch eMTB performance; these bikes are priced accordingly and represent outstanding value for riders who don't need the current generation.

eMTB Mode — Set It and Forget It

Bosch introduced eMTB mode in 2017, and we've been explaining and fitting it ever since. It's still our recommended default for technical trail riding in SEQ, and the reason is simple: it does the thinking for you.

eMTB mode operates across a massive range of power delivery within a single setting. In a rock garden or loose section, it's sensitive — it won't spin your tyre at the wrong moment. On an unexpected steep climb or step-up, it delivers maximum power without you having to reach for the controls. You set it at the trailhead and focus entirely on riding.

If you want the full explanation of why it works read our eMTB mode blog post.

The Bosch Smart System

All current F26 Focus bikes and the Orbea Wild run the Bosch Smart System, which connects your motor to the Flow app. From the app you can:

  • Monitor battery range and remaining capacity in real time
  • Track ride data across sessions
  • Customise motor performance — assistance level, dynamic response, and torque ceiling up to 120Nm on Gen 5 CX bikes
  • Set up navigation and Range Control
  • Activate security features: free eBike Lock, also the alarm and GPS tracking via the ConnectModule if fitted

Available assistance modes: Eco, Tour, Tour+, Auto, Sport, eMTB, and Turbo. At Electric Bikes Brisbane, we've put together a full step-by-step guide to getting the most from the Flow app — read it here.

At handover at our Milton store, we match every customer to a team member who rides the same style of trail. That means your motor tuning, suspension setup, and trail recommendations, if you want some, all come from someone who genuinely rides where you're riding. What's in the Collection

Run-Out Models — Bosch Gen 4 CX, Outstanding Value

These bikes carry the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 4 motor and are priced to reflect that. For riders who want proven Bosch trail performance without paying for the current generation, they're difficult to argue against.

Model Price Category Battery Motor
Focus Thron2 6.7 $6,499 $3,999 Cat 3 Trail/XC 625Wh Bosch CX Gen 4
Focus Thron2 6.9 $8,999 $4,999 Cat 3 Trail/XC 750Wh Bosch CX Gen 4

F26 Current Generation — Bosch Gen 5 CX

All F26 Focus bikes and the Orbea Wild run the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5. As price increases across the range, the motor stays the same — what changes is suspension spec (Fox Factory vs Fox Rhythm vs RockShox), drivetrain, braking system, and tyre choice.

Focus Jam2 — Cat 4 All-Mountain | $6,499–$11,999
The do-everything trail bike. Capable on technical descents, efficient on climbs. Browse the full Focus eMTB range.

Focus Sam2 — Cat 5 Enduro | $7,649–$10,499
Ken West — 2025 QLD eMTB State Champion and Masters 2 DH State Champion — races the Sam2 6.9 as his full race season bike. His total modifications for the entire season: a heavier coil spring, at $50. Race-ready out of the box. Read Ken's full Sam2 6.9 review.

Orbea Wild — Cat 5 Enduro/Race | $10,999–$20,999
The Wild comes directly out of Orbea's World Cup downhill programme. Orbea uses the race series as an ongoing development platform, and it shows. Unashamedly race-derived. See the full Orbea electric mountain bike range.

For riders considering a lighter, Shimano-powered alternative, our lightweight electric mountain bikes collection includes the Orbea Rise with Shimano EP801 RS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Bosch Gen 4 CX and Gen 5 CX?

The Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 4 is fitted to our run-out models — the Focus Thron2 6.7, Thron2 6.9, and Sam2 6.7. It's an excellent motor, still very capable, and these bikes are priced to reflect that they carry the previous generation. If budget is tight then the Gen 4 is a fantastic entry point into Bosch eMTB performance.

The Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 is fitted to all current F26 Focus bikes and the Orbea Wild. With Performance Update 2.0, it delivers up to 120Nm of torque and a 600% support ratio, and is fully compatible with the Smart System ecosystem — including all Flow app features, torque tuning, and connectivity options. Gen 4 is a great place to start; Gen 5 is the current flagship.

Which Bosch eMTB mode should I use on technical trail?

eMTB mode. Set it and leave it. It delivers a massive range of power within a single mode — sensitive in rock gardens and loose terrain where you don't want tyre spin, and capable of maximum output on unexpected steep climbs or technical step-ups. It's been our recommended default for SEQ trail riding since 2017. Full guide: Top 5 Reasons to Get Bosch eMTB Mode.

How does Bosch handle Queensland's heat?

Very well. The Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 handles Queensland's heat particularly well over sustained riding periods — it's one of the reasons we recommend it for SEQ conditions specifically. It also consistently runs the lowest warranty rate of any drive system we stock. Running at the standard 85Nm setting rather than the 120Nm ceiling also keeps thermal load manageable on long summer rides.

Focus Sam2 vs Orbea Wild — which Bosch eMTB is right for me?

Both bikes run the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5. The motor is not the differentiator — philosophy and price are.

The Orbea Wild is race-derived from Orbea's World Cup downhill programme. Orbea continues to use the race series as a development platform, and the Wild reflects that. It is an uncompromising, race-first machine.

The Focus Sam2 targets race-capable performance at a better value price point — and delivers on it. Ken West, 2025 QLD eMTB State Champion, races the Sam2 6.9 as his full race bike with just $50 of modifications for the entire season. Read Ken's Sam2 6.9 review for the full picture. Come into the store and we'll talk through which approach suits your riding.

What does EBB's Bosch approved dealer status mean for me?

At Electric Bikes Brisbane, we've been a Bosch approved dealer since 2015, and we imported our first Bosch ebike in 2014 — placing us among Australia's first retailers to sell Bosch-powered trail bikes when Bosch entered the eMTB market in 2015.

In practice, that means: warranty administration and warranty labour at no charge to you, access to the full Bosch diagnostic toolset (and when it’s a really tricky issue other retailers refer difficult Bosch diagnostics to us), and a team that actually rides Bosch eMTBs on SEQ trails. That last point means motor tuning, suspension setup, and trail recommendations that come from genuine riding experience, not guesswork.

Where can I see the full electric mountain bike range?

Head to our electric mountain bikes collection for the complete picture, including the Amflow PL (Avinox motor) and the Orbea Rise (Shimano EP801 RS). If you're specifically comparing Bosch-powered options, you're already in the right place.

"We can honestly say it's one of the best riding experiences you'll ever have on trail. And from over a decade of servicing these bikes, we also know it's a system most people enjoy riding trouble-free for the long term." — Sam, co-owner, Electric Bikes Brisbane
