Frequently Asked Questions
At Electric Bikes Brisbane, we stock electric mountain bikes for riders who want to do more laps, climb with confidence, and enjoy more of the trails around Brisbane and South East Queensland. Our Milton showroom carries a specialist eMTB range, including Focus, Orbea, Moustache and Amflow models.
Which electric mountain bike suits your riding?
The right eMTB depends less on the biggest spec number and more on how, where and why you ride. If you want a capable local trail bike for Daisy Hill, Ironbark, Gap Creek or Bunyaville, the Focus JAM² range or Amflow range is the kind of bike we point riders toward first. Sam rides a JAM² 6.9 herself and uses it around Ironbark, Bunyaville, Gap Creek, Mount Nebo and Mount Glorious. After six months off the bike with an injury, her second lap down Kombi took about 30 seconds off her previous best time without deliberately trying to ride faster.
If your riding leans toward rougher, faster downhill and enduro terrain, the Focus SAM² is the more planted option. It suits riders who want speed, stability and robustness for trails like Ballbuster at Ironbark, Pipeline and Axe Breaker at Gap Creek, Nerang’s gnarlier lines and Boomerang Farm Bike Park. It is also a strong option for taller or heavier riders because of its robust platform and higher rider rating.
The Focus THRON² is the all-rounder in the family. It can handle mellow mountain biking, green trails, state forest exploring, the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail and Noosa hinterland rides, while still giving enough trail feel to make adventure and touring rides more interesting. The THRON² 6.8 ABS is a standout for riders growing into mountain biking because ABS braking adds confidence, especially when riders are still building technique.
For experienced riders who know exactly what they want, Orbea remains one of the best bikes in the category. Orbea offers the ability to fully custom build your dream EMTB and its mountain bike design and development is driven by its World Cup racing heritage.
Amflow gives riders another option: a lighter, tech-forward eMTB platform using the Avinox system, with the new M2S motor offering up to 150Nm torque and 1,500W peak power in short-burst modes.
Bosch, Avinox and real-world ride feel
Most of our current eMTB range is Bosch-powered, and the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 is a team favourite because it so intuitive on trail and customisable for which trail. On technical climbs, that matters. You want punch when you need it, but not so much power that the bike throws you off balance in tight switchbacks, roots or rock gardens. Bosch also has a long support history through specialist retailers and a great reputation for fast, effective support if you ever strike any problems.
Avinox is different. It is powerful, technology-led and exciting, especially for riders who want huge climbing force and a livelier, poppier ride feel. We see it as an alternative rather than a replacement for Bosch. If you want proven workshop support and intuitive technical control, Bosch is hard to beat. If you want cutting-edge power and app-driven integration, Avinox is well worth considering.
What range should you expect?
This can vary enormously, from 30km to over 100km. Battery range depends on what drive system is in the EMTB, assist mode, motor programming, rider weight, terrain, tyre pressure, climbing and how hard you ride. Sam’s own 600Wh Bosch CX Gen 5 JAM² gives roughly 50-55km of hard mountain biking, or about 80-85km on more mellow mixed rides with bitumen connectors, gravel, pony trails and climbing. For big destination days, such as Old Hiddenvale, she uses a range extender. A heavier rider using higher power settings will get less range.
For most riders, our advice is simple: if you aren't sure what size battery you need or if you need a range extender ride the battery that comes with the bike first, then add a range extender later if your actual riding proves you need it.
Local trails, local setup
Brisbane and SE QLD conditions matter. Ironbark has long climbs back to the top and a mix of trails like Kombi, Sunset and Ballbuster. Daisy Hill is a popular cross-country network and a broad spread of beginner through more technical trail options. Then there is Gap Creek, Bunyaville, and Mount Cotton also within the regular 'Brisbane' EMTB network. We are spoiled for choice with so much riding so close to hand, and such a variety of trail types and styles. Then, with a short drive, there is Nerang, Boomerang Farm, Parklands, Mapleton, Noosa hinterland, Toowoomba and we often have riders making the big trips to places such as Derby, Maydena and Jindabyne.
Before an eMTB leaves our shop, we can set suspension sag, tyre pressures, cockpit position and dropper post height. We can help with app pairing, motor mode guidance, provide brake bed-in advice, service regimes and timing and offer trail-use guidance. That setup matters more than many buyers realise. A great eMTB should feel ready from the first ride, not like a box of parts the rider still has to decode.
Why buy your eMTB from Electric Bikes Brisbane?
We have been in business since 2013 and are one of Australia’s longest-standing specialist e-bike retailers. Our workshop is Bosch-accredited and has full-service capability across electric drive systems, suspension, drivetrains and braking systems. Our strong Google ratings and customer feedback reflect the way we try to look after riders before and after purchase. Our team rides what we sell: Sam rides a Focus JAM² 6.9, Alex Ross rides a JAM² 8.9, head technician Alexander rides a Focus SAM² 6.7 and Nick rides an Orbea Wild with high-end suspension setup.
We also sponsor Queensland downhill rider Ken West, who rides a Focus SAM² 6.9. Ken picked up his SAM² from us on a Friday, raced it on Saturday and made the podium in his first race on the bike. That says a lot about how capable these bikes can be straight out of the shop when they are built and prepared properly.
Buying an electric mountain bike is not just about the cheapest sticker price. It is about getting the right bike, having it set up for your weight and riding style, and knowing there is a specialist workshop behind you after the sale. We also run owners club rides, particularly for adventure-style riding, so customers can keep building confidence after they buy. We aim to offer competitive prices, including a like-for-like price match policy, and we have quality German eMTBs available from around $5,500. More importantly, we give honest advice because we want you happy with the bike for the long term.
Frequently asked questions
Are electric mountain bikes legal in Queensland?
Legal e-bikes in Queensland must meet requirements including a maximum continuous motor output of 250W and motor assistance that cuts off after 25km/h. You do not need registration, insurance or a licence for a legal e-bike, and normal bicycle rules apply. All EMTBs sold by Electric Bikes Brisbane meet regulations.
Is an electric mountain bike heavy?
With a motor and battery EMTBs are heavier than standard mountain bikes. On trail, balance matters more than the number on the scales though, and a good EMTB incorporates that into its design. Extra weight, especially a well-balanced eMTB can feel more stable through rough terrain and give riders more confidence at speed.
How often should I service an electric mountain bike?
An eMTB needs regular care because it is ridden harder, faster and often through rocks, roots, mud, creek crossings and steep climbs. Hard-ridden mountain bikes may need workshop attention every three to six months, especially for drivetrain wear, brake pads, tyres and suspension. Cleaning and lubricating the drivetrain after wet or muddy rides will help the bike shift better and last longer.
